Niger Delta militants urge Buhari to change direction

– Niger Delta militants asked President Buhari to take a new direction in the region’s conflict
– They said his method was not yielding good result
– The militants listed some conditions before peace could be achieved
A group of militants under the umbrella of Niger Delta Cleanser have listed some conditions to President Muhammadu Buhari before peace can be achieved in the Niger Delta region.
The region has been affected by series of bombing of oil and gas pipelines by militants with the most notorious being the Niger Delta Avengers.
The Niger Delta Cleanser noted that the steps taken by President Buhari to end violence and destruction of pipelines in the region were faulty and made some recommendations.
The group insisted that cleaning the environment was important to achieving peace.
Vanguard reports that Mr. Fikenibai Miesin who is the spokesperson of the group spoke in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, August 3 said the militants met in Bayelsa where they came up with the conditions.
“The federal government should make (PMS) petrol available and accessible to every community in the Niger Delta as it is obtainable in other part of Nigeria. All operational head offices of multi-national oil companies should be sited within the host communities while the Corporate Head Office should be sited in cities within the Niger Delta.
“The Federal government should pay the Amnesty allowances regularly to beneficiary. The multi-national oil companies should as a matter of necessity and compulsion withdraw all pending oil compensation cases at all superior courts of record and compensation to the plaintiffs immediately.
“That pipeline security contract should not be awarded to any person outside his community territory. And the federal government should convene a meeting of all genuine Agitators in Niger Delta to discuss a way out of this quagmire.”
He insisted that the government cede all blocks to Niger Deltans rather than in the hands of people who were not from the region.
Meanwhile, former president, Goodluck Jonathan revealed that his visit to President Buhari was about recent issues affecting the country especially the activities of militants.
He stressed that a united Nigeria was needed, saying there cannot be development anywhere without peace.
